This is an RP journal. I'm not Colin, but he's mine and if you steal him, I'll beat you with a stick. I am also not David Anders, and I don't own him, and his image is used without permission. This is all in good fun, and I'll put everything back where I found it.
--Character's age: 35
--If it's a non-canon character, physical description: Colin
--Family/Educational background of character:
Colin was born in Queens, New York, the middle child of three boys (Henry and Paul being the older and younger respectively). He grew up rather well adjusted, having a father, Peter, who was a corrections officer over at Rikers and a mother, Pauline, who was an elementary school teacher at P. S. 132. He was always considered a bright and popular child, who had the benefit of his older brother’s reasonable popularity as he followed in his footsteps with a wide range of extracurricular activities to accompany his good grades. He quickly worked his way through the New York public school system, before graduating in the top ten percent of his class and moving on to Fordham University to study business.
After graduating from Fordham with honors, he made his way over to the New York University Business school to get his MBA. While studying in school, he was sharing an apartment with three other friends, one of whom happened to be a law student. One night, he was helping him prepare for a big exam, and while he started reading the law books initially to help his friend prepare for the exam, but once he started reading he couldn’t stop. By the end of the semester he was changing his major and applying to the law school to get him started on his law career.
Upon graduating from NYU, once again with honors, he acquired a full time junior associate position at one of the law firms that he had interned in while he was in school. He worked his way through the ranks, making friends and network connections that he needed in order to succeed. He got along well with most of the partners there, and he was a shark of a lawyer, giving more than a hundred and ten percent to his clients, but the hierarchy of the firm itself was enough to give him pause. They had a very downcast look on the working middle class of the city, and when Colin would take on working class cases to do favors for friends of his fathers, that often brought him into conflict with the named partners. After six years at Wilson, Wilson and Schroeder, he quit, saying it was under the guise of wanting to get some experience on the other side of the table for his pursuit of the bench and made his way over to the Queens District Attorney’s Office in Homicide, and then four years later, he made his way over to the Manhattan’s DA’s office.
However, he had high aspirations for the bench from the get go, and that is his current long term goal. Depending how soon he achieves that goal, he might pursue a career in politics if given the opportunity, but for now, he is comfortable biding his time at the ADA position. He’s looking to build his reputation on both sides of the table in order to make him a better candidate, and his reputation is crucial, so much so that he’s not one to make waves unless it’ll get him the attention he feels he deserves.
--Personality--likes/dislikes:
Colin grew up a happy child, and a good chunk of that carried over to his personality as an adult. He’s intelligent, and likes to make sure that people know he’s a bit more than whatever is left at face value. He also can be glib and considered charming—not to the point where everyone loves him or that he doesn’t have enemies, but he has a natural ease with people that just works for him. It’s possible that it’s just something that comes with being a middle child, but he’s not about to knock it. He gets along with people well and they with him, for the most part, and while some personalities just don’t mesh, he’s aware enough of himself to avoid interaction with that person as often as possible.
He’s also rather ambitious, almost to a fault, and he will take whatever step necessary to make sure that he succeeds. It’s not that he minded the life his father had, way back in Queens, but he wants to do better than that for himself, and he also wants to sit on the bench at some point, so he’s willing to work to get the job done that he needs to get done. He’s not all charm and personality, he’s got some skills too—the personality is just his stronger area.
--Traits, Weaknesses, Quirks:
He chews gum when he’s nervous. It’s a tick he picked up when he was a kid, he claims it help him get rid of the nervous energy. He also tends to tease. A lot. A lot of the time it more reflects back on him, or is just looking to get a laugh and to get the person to relax. He hates a lot of tension in a room unless he’s in court and he’s going for a moment. When it comes to coworkers/associates/friends, he needs a light hearted atmosphere and a friendly back and forth for him to really get comfortable. It’s why he relies on his charm a lot, actually, because he can’t stand that first, awkward, getting to know you phase that comes when he’s first being introduced to someone.
He’s also slightly self conscious about his background. He’s not ashamed of it, by any means, but it’s one of the reasons why he left Wilson, Wilson and Schroeder as soon as he did. He can’t stand it when people he associates with put down the working class, after everything that his parents went through to get him and his brothers to where they are today. He also tends to try not to think stereotypically when it comes to his clients or victims or even the defendants for that matter, and argue things with a clean slate, based just on the facts and merits of the case.
Colin is also one of those lawyers with a dorsal fin. He’s not the kind of lawyer that sees the client and/or the victim, only the acquittal/conviction. He’s looking at the impact on his reputation, as oppose to the results for his client. This can lead to him making some ethically-questionable decisions in order to secure whatever result he wants to achieve for his case. He’s not so ethically challenged that he’s on the take, or anything like that, he’s just willing to use any argument necessary in order to get the results he wants. He feels that’s what good lawyers do, and it doesn’t matter which side of the bench he’s working on, he’s going to apply the same tactics, which can put him at odds with his coworkers.
He’s also a horrendous flirt. He will flirt with anything with legs and boobs, and while that may seem harmless it has gotten him into trouble in the past. Mix women, booze, and Colin's natural inclination to flirt and odds are always one to one that the level of stupidity is going to be high. And while the trouble is usually something he can attempt to smooth talk his way out of, there have been times where he’s been brushed with some serious trouble, however not enough to get him to play things a little smarter. It’s a bit of his Achilles’ heel outside the courtroom, and something he really has yet to fix.
He is also, at times, a victim of his own logic. Rationalizing is one of his strong points, but if someone doesn’t see his logic, he will argue till he’s blue in the face trying to get them too understand his point of view, even with the most stubborn of minds. It’s frustrating to him, as both a person and a lawyer (mostly because he argues for a living) but he would like his point of view to at least be understood if not accepted. It was one of the things that brought him into conflict with the senior partners of his old law firm, and another one of the reasons why he left. Often times, his logic doesn’t make a lot of sense to the rest of the world on first glance, but it’s the way his mind works, and he hates it when his point of view is dismissed based on either lack of understanding or ignorance.
